The Tower of London on the River Thames is one of the cities most famous landmarks. It attracts thousands of visitors each year. The tower was founded nearly a millennium ago and has been expanded upon quite considerably ever since. The Tower of London houses Britain's crown jewels, the chapel of St John and the Royal Armouries.
Over the years, this legendary tower has served as an armoury, fortress, zoo, treasury, mint, palace, place of execution, observatory, refuge, and prison (mainly for upper class prisoners). This is where Sir Walter Raleigh was imprisoned for years until he was finally beheaded in 1618. It's also known as the "Bloody Tower". This last use has led to the phrase "sent to the Tower" meaning "imprisoned".
The Tower of London is a fascinating structure. It's completely filled with history and can be a great learning trip for young children as well as adults. Every time you visit, you'll come away with a new piece of knowledge about England's past. A visit to the tower is an educational experience as well as a great day out.
You can visit the tower almost every day of the year. It's open to the public every day except Christmas day, Christmas Eve, Boxing Day, and New Years Day.
