This is an absolute must for any visitor to Birmingham. The Barber Institute is one of the world's finest small art galleries and has an outstanding collection of old and modern paintings, drawings and sculpture.

It was founded in 1932 and over the years has acquired some stunning collections of Old Master and 19th Century art. It contains masterpieces by Simone Martini, Bellini, Rubens, Murillo and Gainsborough, Bellini, Canaletto, Monet, Renoir, Rossetti and Van Gogh.

The Barber Institute is a little out of the way. It's just outside the city centre, adjacent to the University of Birmingham. It's quite easy to get to though. The gallery doesn't normally get as crowded as the larger galleries so you'll have plenty of space to look around which always makes it a lot more pleasant.

The Barber Institute is also a regular venue for concerts, lectures and other events. Admission is free.

Monday to Saturday - 10am - 5pm,
Sunday - 2pm - 5pm
Closed - Good Friday, 24 to 26 Dec, and New Years Day
