Chester's galleried streets, known as "The Rows", date back to the Middle ages. The shops open onto terraced walkways which can only be reached by steps from the street. The city has some fine timbered inns and half-timbered buildings dating back to Tudor times.

Chester's red sandstone cathedral dates back to the 14th century. It was a Benedictine Abbey until its dissolution in 1540. The following year, it became the cathedral for the new diocese of Chester.
