Wimbledon started out as a small English club back in the 19th century. Nowadays it's a high profile event with international players and packed with celebrity spectators. Millions of people from all over the globe watch Wimbledon live on TV every year. It's traditional for spectators to eat strawberries and cream whilst watching the match.
Wimbledon began in 1877. Its the oldest major tennis tournament in the world. They started offering prize money in 1968. Back then, the total amount you could win was 26,150 pounds, the equivalent of 38,386.74 euros. |
