If you’re anywhere near York, don’t miss out on this opportunity. The city of York is surrounded by over four miles of medieval walls that provide some excellent walking through 1900 years of history, and some of the most idyllic urban and rural scenery in this part of the UK.

The walls were built back in Roman times. They have been added to and rebuilt many times since then. Nowadays we can see various parts of the walls from a number of different centuries.

The walk starts off at the St. Georges Field car park. Then you'll take a short loop around Clifford's tower before joining the walls again at Fishergate Postern Tower.

Then it's on to Foss Islands Road, where the largest break in the walls is. This is where William the Conqueror created the large pool of water in an attempt to deter would-be attackers.

When you rejoin the walk at Foss Bank going towards Bootham Bar you'll get a fantastic view of York Minster. You can see all the way across the red roofs to its majestic splendour.

Next stop is the Museum Gardens, where you?ll see the spectacular Roman Multi-angular Tower. You?ll also see remains of St Mary's Abbey, which was once the wealthiest Benedictine abbey in the north of England.

Then it's on to Lendal Bridge and then to Skeldergate. From here you walk by the side of the River Ouse to the Millennium Bridge; along this section, you'll really get to appreciate the beauty of York's countryside. Surrounded by this idyllic open countryside, it?s hard to believe that York's bustling city centre is less than one mile away.

Then it?s a gentle stroll up the other side of the Ouse back to the starting point - St. Georges Field car park.

The whole walk is a delightful experience. It takes just over 4 hours. Some of the most notable stopping points include: Treasurer's House, York Minster itself and the National Railway Museum.
