It's home to the largest foreign exchange market in the world, the richest football club (Manchester United) and the inventor of the hovercraft. JK Rowling, author of the famous Harry Potter books, was born here. Great Britain consists of the two kingdoms of England and Scotland,and the principality of Wales. It's an island lying off the western coast of Europe.
England itself is famous for many things - David Beckham, fish and chips, pubs, Big Ben, red buses, black cabs, Oasis, Blur, the Beatles, Wimbledon, Princess Diana, London and of course, tea.
The capital and largest city, London, is in the southeast of the country. It's located at both sides of the massive River Thames. Greater London has a total land area of 1,580 square kilometers and is divided into 32 boroughs. There are currently over 6 and a half million people
living in London.
Britain is a country of mixed cultures. London has the largest non-white population of any European city and over 250 languages are spoken there. There are large populations of Asian, African and
Caribbean Blacks, Jews, and other ethnic minorities such as Eastern Europeans, Iraqi's and Turks.
Modern day Britain is an incredibly diverse country. It's a fascinating mixture of history, art, culture and tradition. There's a dynamic mixture of people living here; there's also thousands of places to visit and a million different things to do and see. |
